In this presentation Fernando “Bo” Flores, CHR Program Manager for Colorado River Indian Tribes, discusses the pathway to becoming a proficient and reliable Community Health Representative (CHR) by emphasizing the importance of professional growth through training, experience, and education. He reviews the evolving roles and responsibilities of CHRs while providing actionable insights for their career progression and contributions to community health. He also share on the developmental process of an entry-level CHR becoming a skilled and trusted community health representative through training, experience, and education and provides information and understanding on CHR workforce development from the perspective of the Colorado River Indian Tribes CHR Program. CHR position descriptions and responsibilities outlined as CHR I, CHR II, and CHR III are also discussed.

Fernando “Bo” Flores Jr. is an enrolled member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes in Parker, Arizona, and he has heritage from the Mohave, Chemehuevi, Piute, and Shoshone tribes. Having lived his entire life in Parker, Bo has developed a deep understanding of his community through personal interactions. He has worked for the CRIT Tribe for the past 14 years, serving as the Community Health Representative (CHR) Program Manager for the last 10 years. Bo is dedicated to health services and continuously strives to enhance the well-being of his community. He plans to further develop the CRIT CHR Program by expanding services and utilizing outreach and community-based resources.

Michelle Archuleta, MS, MA, is an enrolled member of the Lone Pine Paiute-Shoshone Tribe with ancestry to the Ohkay Owingeh. She is currently the Indian Health Service National Community Health Representative (CHR) Consultant and Community Health Team Lead. Michelle has an extensive background in health promotion, and community-based programming at the local, state, regional and national levels. Her professional interests include health coaching, Indigenous storywork, and advocacy for the advancement of the field of community health and CHRs critical to the front-line of health and healthcare.
