Dr. Mary Carol Greenlee, practitioner at Western Slope Endocrinology in Grand Junction, Colorado, discusses caring for patients with diabetes who are prescribed atypical antipsychotics. These medications are associated with weight gain and alterations in glucose metabolism, making management difficult for patients with diabetes. They are also associated with new-onset diabetes, particularly in younger patients. Dr. Greenlee gives an overview of the risk factors, screening recommendations, and management best practices based on emerging clinical studies.
