In this series of presentations, Dr Ryan Pett, clinical pharmacist at Yakama Indian Health Center, will present a case from a NW tribal community. Then, LCDR Shawn Blackshear, Senior Environmental Health Specialist at Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, shares the Yakama Indian Health Service’s Ambulatory Medical Clinic And Environmental Health Program’s strategies for managing asthma though medicine and health living environments.

Lieutenant commander (LCDR) Shawn Blackshear, U.S. Public Health Service, started his career in public health with the Texas Department of Agriculture as a pesticides sensitive-sites specialist. LCDR Blackshear has worked for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the Indian Health Service (IHS) as a field representative. He currently serves as the Senior Environmental Health Specialist at Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB), conducts asthma home visits for the Yakama Clinic Asthma Management Program, manages the CDC tribal homes well water risk assessment grant, and is a licensed registered sanitarian in Washington State. He brings a keen sense of humor and 23 years of work experience to the NPAIHB Environmental Public Health Program. When Shawn isn’t working, he can be found feeding, riding, or dreaming about horses.

 

Ryan Pett is a clinical pharmacist at Yakama Indian Health Center where he provides asthma education for pediatric and adult patients. He has worked with Indian Health Service for 8 years as a USPHS Commissioned Officer.

 

Dr. Geniel Harrison is also our lead faculty.  She is the Chief Medical Officer at the Portland Area Indian Health Service. She provides clinical oversight and direction to the medical services and public health initiatives of the Portland Area Indian Health Service throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. She also administers many aspects of the Area’s overall AI/AN health care programs.  Prior to this position, she served as a Clinical Director at various health care facilities (Tribal and federal) since 2013. Dr. Harrison is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine who has worked with the Indian Health Service for 13 years. She is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation located on the border of Utah and Nevada.
