In this presentation, Dr. Amy Sarma, Co-Director of the Women’s Heart Health Program and Cardiovascular disease and Pregnancy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, describes why echocardiography is important in the care of the pregnant patient, when should you consider echocardiography, how to recognize normal changes and abnormal findings to prevent serious cardiac events, the advantages to echocardiography, and provides additional considerations in the care of the pregnant patient.

Dr. Amy Sarma, MD

Amy Sarma, MD, is the Co-Director of the Women’s Heart Health Program and Cardiovascular disease and Pregnancy Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Amy is a noninvasive cardiologist with a particular interest in women’s cardiovascular health, cardiovascular disease in pregnancy, and echocardiography. She received her MD and Masters in Health Sciences degrees from Yale University. Subsequently, she trained in internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and then in general cardiology and advanced echocardiography at Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a clinical cardiologist and echocardiographer, and sees both general cardiology as well as patients in the Women’s Heart Health program. Her research interests are in cardiovascular disease in pregnancy and sex differences in cardiovascular disease.
