Eve Espey

MD, MPH

Eve Espey is Professor and Chair of the Department of Ob/Gyn and Family Planning fellowship Director at the University of New Mexico. She is past President of the Society of Family Planning and current Chair of the ACOG LARC Work Group as well as President of the Council of University Chairs of OB-GYN. She was instrumental in helping Family Planning achieve ACGME subspecialty status and is a member of the ABOG Complex Family Planning Division. Dr. Espey won the Margaret Sanger Award, 50th anniversary of Planned Parenthood of Rocky Mountains 2014 and the Rashbaum Award for Excellence in Family Planning from Physicians for Reproductive Health in 2013. She gave the ACOG Irvin Cushner Memorial lecture in 2014 and 2017 and addressed the United Nations in 2015 on the topic of intimate partner violence in Native American Women. She was recognized for her lifetime’s work in promoting Family Planning by the Fellowship in Family Planning in 2017; she has won a medical student teaching award every year of her 23 years as faculty in the Department of OB-GYN. As Immediate Past President of the New Mexico Perinatal Collaborative and Chair of the Department of OB-GYN, Dr. Espey is dedicated to improving access to women’s healthcare in New Mexico. She works with medical students, residents, fellows, midwives, nurse practitioners and pharmacists as a colleague and as an educator. She has numerous publications in contraception, abortion and medical education and has presented locally, regionally and nationally on these topics.

CAPT Holly Van Lew

PharmD, BCPS, AAHIVP

Captain Holly Van Lew is an advanced practice pharmacist in the Indian Health Service (IHS). She is a subject matter expert in immunizations and syndemic work (HIV/STI/HCV) and continues collaborating with pharmacy leadership to advance pharmacy practice. CAPT Van Lew is passionate about women’s health and available pharmacy interventions to address family planning and sexual health. She is currently working at IHS Headquarters as an HIV/STI/HCV and Communicable Disease Pharmacy Consultant.

CDR Tina Pattara-Lau

Lead Faculty

CDR Tina Pattara-Lau, MD, FACOG, is the Maternal and Child Health Consultant with the IHS Office of Clinical and Preventive Services. In this role, she serves as subject matter expert, develops national programs and policies, and collaborates with federal and community resources to optimize patient access to quality care. She began her IHS career in 2015 as an OB/GYN at Phoenix Indian Medical Center, Parker and Peach Springs Indian Health Centers, and Valleywise Health Medical Center. During the COVID-19 pandemic she developed modified guidelines for OB/GYN care including delivery of telehealth prenatal care, vaccine education for patients, and multidisciplinary simulation training for Obstetric Readiness in the Emergency Department.

Tina graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology and Psychology. She commissioned into the US Public Health Service in 2007 and received her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2011. She completed her OB/GYN residency at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, is board certified, and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

Dr. Patricia Capo

Dr. Patricia (Tricia) Capo, MD, FACOG, is an ObGyn physician at Alaska Native Medical Center and Southcentral Foundation in Anchorage, Alaska. She graduated from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and completed her residency training at The Mayo Clinic and Greenville Hospital System in South Carolina. Tricia has an inherent passion for Indigenous women’s health. She is a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and grew up on the White Earth Reservation in northern Minnesota. As a physician and a patient in the IHS system she hopes to provide a unique perspective and strive for quality care for Indigenous people.
