In this series of presentations, Dr. Allison Empey, Pediatrician, reviews a common case study in vaccine hesitancy. Then, Dr. Thomas Weiser, Medical Epidemiologist at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, shares a brief overview of current vaccination rates in Indian Country. Finally, Dr. Ryan Hassan, Pediatrician serving on the Boost Oregon Medical Advisory Board, provides an overview of immunizations, and common strategies to empower clinicians to become better advocates for their patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Ryan Hassan, Dr. Tom Weiser

Ryan Hassan, M.D., M.P.H serves on the Boost Oregon Medical Advisory Board (“MAB”) where he provides insight and expertise for their educational resources and programs and acts in an advisory capacity in all medical and scientific matters related to Boost Oregon. Like other MAB members Dr. Hassan contributes his expertise on a pro bono basis with no conflict of interest between his professional work and his volunteer work for Boost Oregon. Dr Hassan is a board-certified pediatrician working at Oregon Pediatrics in Happy Valley, where he lives with his wife, Christen, and chihuahua, Luna Joe. His professional work centers around improving the lives of children by promoting preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyle choices at the individual and community levels and by empowering physicians to become better advocates for their patients. Dr. Hassan is an avid outdoors enthusiast, and enjoys running, biking, swimming, hiking, backpacking, climbing, snowboarding, and kitesurfing.

Thomas Weiser, M.D. M.P.H. has been with the Indian Health Services since 1998, initially serving as an Indian Health Services Medical Officer in Whiteriver, Arizona from 1998-2005 and the 2007- present serving as the Medical Epidemiologist for the Portland Area Indian Health Service (PA IHS) assigned to the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board and Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center. Dr. Weiser also completed the CDC Epidemiology Intelligence Service from 2005-2007 where he was assigned to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Dr. Weiser currently serves as co- chair of the PA IHS Institutional Review Board.
Dr. Weiser is passionate about improving the quality of healthcare services, data access and data quality for American Indian and Alaska Native populations; human subjects protection; infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance.
