In this series of presentations, Dr. Jorge Mera, MD, FACP, Indian Country ECHO Medical Director and Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation Health Services (CNHS), provides an overview of human treponematoses, a brief history of syphilis, and an introduction to eliminating syphilis in Indian Country. Then, Ashley Hoover, MPH, Indian Country ECHO faculty member and Syndemic Support Director at the the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board,  reviews surveillance, data considerations, and current best practice recommendations to effectively respond to syphilis in Indian Country.

Ashley Hoover, MPH, currently serves as the Syndemic Support Director at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. Previously, Ashley served as a STD/HIV Perinatal Surveillance Supervisor at the Louisiana Department of Health STD/HIV Program and Research Assistant at the Mary Amelia Douglas-Whited Community Women’s Health Education Center. Ashley has a Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Science in Youth Development, International Humanitarian Assistance, Nonprofit Organization Leadership from the University of Florida.

Dr. Jorge Mera is the Director of Infectious Diseases for Cherokee Nation Health Services (CNHS), the largest tribally operated health care system in the United States. He completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in Infectious Diseases. During recent years Jorge’s efforts have been dedicated to organizing the Cherokee Nation HCV elimination program, as well as the HIV/HCV ECHO project. He is also the Director of the HIV clinic since 2012 and the Principal Investigator of the End the HIV Epidemic for the CNHS. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine of the Oklahoma State University Health Science Center and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.
