In this presentation, Andrew Hunt, MSW, (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina) discusses Improving Cultural Competency when Serving American Indian and Alaska NativesAndrew defines the term “cultural competence” and identifies the five elements of the cultural competence model. He also shares how to examine one’s own culture and reactions to cultural differences as well as ideas for personal and professional growth using the cultural competence framework.

R. Andrew Hunt, MSW (Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina) is a retired Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service following a 30-year career. He received his Masters in Social Work in 1991 from Portland State University, where he began his protégé relationship with Terry Cross – one of the founders of the cultural competence movement. Since then, he has provided various versions of this training to a wide range of audiences across the country. As an independent consultant, he continues to be recognized as a thought leader in the field of cultural competence and topics related to tribal mental health and community development. He currently lives in Mount Airy, Maryland.
