Maternal Substance Use Disorders and Infant Withdrawal Syndromes in Hospital Deliveries Among American Indians/Alaska Natives | December 19, 2019

In this presentation, Dr. Chiao-Wen Lan, Dr. Tom Weiser, and Sujata Joshi from the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board, discuss how prenatal exposure to substances can negatively affect fetal development. They also look at the effects on fetal development as a result of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Chiao-Wen Lan, PhD, MPH, is an Epidemiologist with the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board.

Thomas Weiser, MD, MPH, has been with Portland Area Indian Health Services since 1998, initially serving as an Indian Health Services Medical Officer in Whiteriver, Arizona from 1998-2005. He completed the CDC Epidemiology Intelligence Service from 2005-2007, assigned to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. In 2007, he began his new position assigned to the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board and Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center. Dr. Weiser is passionate about improving the quality of healthcare services, data access and data quality for American Indian and Alaska Native populations; human subjects protection; infectious disease epidemiology and surveillance.

Sujata Joshi, MSPH, is the Project Director of the Improving Data & Enhancing Access (IDEA-NW) project. Sujata received her MSPH with a concentration in epidemiology from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Prior to joining the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board in 2013, she served as an epidemiologist at the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona Tribal Epidemiology Center and as an environmental epidemiologist for the State of Oregon.
