In this presentation, Dr. Carol Greenlee, endocrinologist, discusses medication nonadherence as a major cause of treatment failure & poor outcomes, but is often overlooked. Dr. Greenlee shares how forgetfulness (unintentional nonadherence) can be a factor, but intentional factors are more common and complex – and require more complex solutions – fear of side effects/harm, lack of physician trust and lack of understanding the condition and/or the intended benefit of the medication are major factors contributing to medication non-adherence. Finally, Dr. Greenlee shares valuable recommendations to routinely ask about problems with medications or adherence, and how to improve patient self-efficacy and patient understanding of the need for the medication help improve medication adherence.
