The Northwest Elders and Knowledge Keepers ECHO session took place on January 9th, 2024. In this presentation, Julia Ortiz (Mexica Nahua Mayan) and Charene Alexander (Lummi Nation) discuss the Native Transformations Project and Coast Salish Wellness Model.

Charene Alexander, MPH (Lummi Nation) is the Native Transformations Project Director at the Northwest Indian College Center for Health. Charene has previously served on the NIWC Board of Trustees, and held positions as the Project Development Specialist of the Lummi Xwle’lemes “Restorative Justice” Department, and the Vocational Rehabilitation Transition Counselor of the Lummi Vocational Rehabilitation Program servicing Tribal youth and young adults impacted by disabilities.
Julia Ortiz, MSW, is a Mexica Nahua Mayan and long-time Lummi community and family member who is a proud mom, grandmother, and daughter. She loves to travel to beautiful and faraway lands and experience all this world has to offer.
Julia has worked many years in tribal mental health services, building programs for supporting the holistic health of our tribal families. She is currently the Mental Health Director for the Swinomish Tribe, and is engaged in several health research projects that focus on developing native focused healing for our people.
