Barbara Franks

English name is Barbara Franks, my Tlingit name is Neech Tlaa, which means “Mother of the Shoreline.” I’m originally from Hoonah, Alaska but spent 30 years or so in Juneau.

Past Chairman of the Board for the Alaska Statewide Suicide Prevention Council as I fill the category of survivor, someone who lost a loved one to suicide. Also, a former member of the Alaska Board of Directors for NAMI, and the Alaska Psychiatric Institute. As a graduate of the University of Alaska, Anchorage, with an Associate Degree with emphasis on cultural diversity in Human Services that opened doors to share what steps I took to help me on my healing journey. After receiving permission from the Elders of the 12 Regional Corporations, it’s been my goal to share awareness in Alaska, I have clocked in 700,000 air miles as an employee of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, and extensive work experience with Sealaska Corporation. I am a former trainer of several intervention models, safeTALK, ASIST, Survivor Voices, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Survivor Talking Circle and formerly a Level One for the international Critical Incident Stress Management Team for Alaska.

My self-care includes reading a variety of books but eventually, there will be a coping skill that I can use during my down time.
