In this series of presentations, Dr. Jean Howe, IHS Chief Clinical Consultant for Ob/Gyn, and Dr. Tina Pattara-Lau, Maternal and Child Health consultant for the IHS, provide a national overview and highlight best practices for responding to the rise of congenital syphilis rates in Indigenous communities. Dr Melanie Taylor also shares how you and your staff can recognize, respond to and prevent congenital syphilis.

Dr. Jean Howe, MD, MPH, is the Chief Clinical Consultant for Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN CCC). Dr. Howe is very interested in establishing a dialogue and/or networking with anyone involved in Women’s Health or Maternity Care, especially as it applies to American Indian or Alaska Native Women or Indigenous Women around the world.

Dr. Melanie Taylor, MD, MPH, AAHIVM is a Medical Epidemiologist for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of HIV Prevention. Dr. Taylor also holds the rank of Captain with the United States Public Health Service. She is currently assigned to the Arizona Department of Health Services, Maricopa Department of Public Health HIV Physician, and has been a HIV Physician at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center since 2011.

LCDR Tina Pattara-Lau, MD, FACOG is the Maternal and Child Health Consultant with the Indian Health Service (IHS) Office of Clinical and Preventive Services (OCPS). In this role, she serves as subject matter expert for the IHS, develops national programs and policies, and collaborates with federal and community resources to optimize patient access to quality care. She began her IHS career in 2015 as an OBGYN providing comprehensive care to American Indian/Alaska Native women at Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC), Parker and Peach Springs Indian Health Centers, and Valleywise Health Medical Center. During the COVID-19 pandemic she developed modified guidelines for OBGYN care including delivery of telehealth prenatal care, vaccine education for patients, and multidisciplinary simulation training for obstetric readiness in the Emergency Department. LCDR Pattara-Lau graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with degrees in Molecular and Cell Biology and Psychology. She commissioned into the US Public Health Service in 2007 and received her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2011. She completed her OBGYN residency at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, is board certified, and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
