Incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rising quickly in the United States, and AI/AN people are being affected greater than any other group. In this presentation, Dr. Jon Gerry, surgeon and physician at Franz Liver Cancer Clinic, Providence Portland Medical Center and The Oregon Clinic GMIS, discusses the importance of screening for HCC and catching it early, identifies patients to be screened, and shares screening measures and methodologies.

Dr. Jon Gerry
Jon Gerry, MD, FACS, received his MD from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency in general surgery at Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Following that, he spent four years in Anchorage at the Alaska Native Medical Center in the Phoenix Integrated Surgical Residency Program. Most recently, Dr. Gerry was a fellow in hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery at Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Gerry appreciates that HPB surgery offers the opportunity to have a positive impact in his patients’ lives and provides them with hope during a difficult time. Dr. Gerry is skilled in minimally invasive techniques due to his extensive training in HPB surgery. Dr. Gerry’s background in general surgery also gives him a broad perspective. As a general surgeon at the Alaska Native Medical Center, Dr. Gerry practiced his skills across several surgical disciplines. He found the opportunity to provide care to the Alaska Native People to be an honor. Outside of work, Dr. Gerry enjoys mountain biking, camping throughout Oregon, playing with his children, and cooking with his wife.
