Indian Country ECHO in partnership with the IHS HOPE Committee hosted a Grand Rounds focused on supporting American Indian and Alaska Native pregnant and parenting people experiencing SUDs. In this series of presentations, Dr Mishka Terplan highlights best practices for screening, diagnosing, and initiating treatment for pregnant and parenting people experiencing substance use disorders. Then, LCDR Teresa Grund and Nicole Larsen from the Red Lake Indian Health Service Hospital clinic share the story of how their facility chooses to recognize, respond to, and support pregnant and parenting people experiencing SUDs. The one-hour Grand Rounds session included an opportunity to engage in a didactic presentation, become part of a learning community, and join a Substance Use Disorder ECHO program.

Dr. Mishka Terplan is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and in addiction medicine. His primary clinical, research and advocacy interests lie along the intersections of reproductive and behavioral health. Dr. Terplan is nationally recognized as an expert in the care of pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorder. He has been central to guidance document development at the American Congress of Obstetrician Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and has participated in expert panels at Center for Disease Control, Office of the National Drug Control Policy, Office of Women’s Health, US Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health primarily on issues related to gender and addiction. Dr. Terplan has active grant funding and has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles with emphasis on addiction medicine, drug use in pregnancy, health disparities, stigma, and access to treatment.
Dr. Terplan is the Associate Medical Director at Friends Research Institute, the Addiction Medicine Consultant for Virginia Medicaid and adjunct faculty at the University of California, San Francisco where he is a Substance Use Warmline clinician for its Clinical Consultation Center.
LCDR Teresa Grund, RPh, NCPS, BCPS, BCPP, is a behavioral health clinical pharmacist at the Red Lake IHS Hospital in Red Lake, MN. LCDR Grund is a fully credentialed and privileged pharmacist in primary care, palliative care, medication assisted treatment, and behavioral health. Prior to coming to Red Lake, Teresa was a community pharmacist and hospice consultant. Her areas of recent focus include behavioral health medication management, suicide prevention, medication assisted treatment, and complex trauma care. She is a 2017 American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists Advanced Pain and Palliative Care Trainee with certifications in Aboriginal Focus-Oriented Therapy and Complex Trauma Care. She is also a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist. On a personal note, Teresa is a true Disney Fan, certified diver, and enjoys traveling with her family.
Nicole Larsen, BSN, RN is a nurse and Recovery Care Coordinator at the Red Lake IHS Hospital in Red Lake, MN.
