In this presentation, Andrew Yu, MS, BSN, RN, ACRN, highlights best practices for responding to the rise of syphilis in Indigenous communities. Andrew provides an overview of syphilis (including the natural history of untreated syphilis, primary/secondary/latent/tertiary and congenital syphilis, as well as the neurologic manifestations of syphilis), the current epidemiology, rapid/point-of-care tests available, testing algorithms including non-treponemal and treponemal approaches, as well as testing options for I/T/U clinics to implement (via standing orders, express STI testing services, in-home specimens collection, and expanded screening). Andrew then reviews the management and treatment of syphilis & congenital syphilis, Jarisch-Herxheimer Reaction, post-treatment follow-up and field based screening and treatment strategies, allergies, DoxyPEP, how our EHRs can be leveraged to improve screening, case management approaches, and discusses how we can communicate with and provide incentives to our communities to best respond to the rise in syphilis in Indian Country.
