In this session, Dr. Dominick Maggio, Emergency Department Director at IHS Whiteriver Service Unit and Dr. Michael Henry, EM Physician and Clinical Quality Advisor at IHS Colorado River Service Unit, lead a discussion with UCSF HEAL Fellow Dr. Kelly Bogaert, currently on rotation at IHS Shiprock Service Unit. We hope that all pregnant people will follow their birth plan and deliver close to their due dates in OB-equipped facilities with OB providers. On the other hand, we know that laboring patients show up in small, rural EDs without adequate OB resources. It can be difficult to judge whether you have time to transfer safely to an OB-enabled facility; what you need to assure safe transfer; and how to prepare in case you cannot transfer. Our panel of inter-professional faculty members discuss how to prepare your ED for obstetric patients, how to make judgements about transfer vs. ED delivery, review routine delivery and postpartum care and share skills for handling common delivery complications.
